DP Likely To Return On Road Trip, How Will Fans Respond?

Before I start my entry on Rick DiPietro's long awaited return to the New York Islanders line-up, I thought I should introduce myself. My name is Rob McGowan. I am a recent graduate of Stony Brook University with a Bachelor's Degree in English with a Minor in History. I will shortly be starting Graduate School at CUNY Queens to achieve my Masters Degree as an Elementary School teacher with Special Ed. certification. My life has revolved around hockey for the passed decade and still does to this day. I still play ice hockey with some roller thrown in once in a while, coached high school roller hockey, and currently officiate ice hockey as well. I am also a member of the NYI Blog Box...

Islanders Prospects at the World Junior Hockey Championships

The New York Islanders have seven, yes count them, seven players all playing for their respective countries at the World Junior Hockey Championships that have kicked off today, December 26th, 2009. They are: Canada: Travis Hamonic – Defenseman Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, this 6′2″, 215 lbs blue liner brings a very gifted shot and scoring touch to the ice. Currently playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL, and has registered 104 points in 171 games at that level. He is a gritty player, who has quite the edge to his game as well as he has registered 305 penalties in minutes in his four years in the WHL. A Shea Weber type in the making. ...

We're doing it again

Now that the holidays are done and over with, the battle of New York is upon us once again. The New York Islanders head west, about thirty minutes west, to the famous Madison Square Garden to do battle with the cross town rival New York Rangers for the third time this month. In their last 14 games at Madison Square Garden, the New York Islanders are 9-4-1. The last time the two clubs met there were back to back games that resulted in a split home and home series with both teams winning in the others building. The rival Rangers have a four point lead in the standings on the Islanders with the Rangers having a game in hand. The Rangers hold the eight seed in the Eastern Conferenc...

Dwayne Roloson makes 2 Incredible Saves

Saves of the year so far? Credit to the officials on and off the ice for that one, it looks like it could have been in from a few angles, but they seem to have made the right call. Either way, tremendous saves, you gotta give Rollie credit for these!

Ricky Returning?

As per KatieStrangeNYI via twitter, GM Garth Snow is eyeing mid-Deccember as a return date for Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro. DiPietro who has missed all but five games since the 2007-08 season finally has a timeline on a return. Drafted in the 1st round, 1st overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, DiPietro was slated to be the "franchise" player the New York Islanders coveted since the trade that sent Roberto Luongo out of New York. Of course, in winning the lottery this past off-season, the Islanders now have two potential "franchise" players within their organization. With John Tavares having a fantastic start to his rookie season, he and DiPietro are two pieces to build the future a...

Islanders need to set the #1

I do not understand it. Do I need to personally walk into Scott Gordon’s coaching office an sit down and explain to him to finally secure the #1 goalie position? Should I be the one to go up to Gordon and tell him that Dwayne Roloson needs to get at least four straight starts? If I am, let me know. I am a Martin Biron supporter, do not get me wrong. He had a brilliant game against the Flyers, as well as a few other times this season. Unfortunately he only has two wins to his credit. Yesterday proved that the team plays two different types of hockey when the goalies are being swapped game in and game out. Biron deserves better, that’s for sure. We all know that Roloson was signed...

Islanders finally feel at home

On Wednesday night the New York Islanders returned home from a seven game road trip that spanned out over thirteen days. The road trip had it's ups and downs for the "Isles" but they returned home with a mission accomplished. Scott Gordon wanted to have the club return home at or above .500 from the trip, and the team did just that returning 3-2-2. The first game back was a game that seemed to have a bit of fatigue catch up with the team as they went from playing two very solid periods of hockey to disappearing in the third period. It's been stated time and time again that the team needs to complete a sixty minute game, and on Wednesday against the Flyers they failed to do such. Martin...

Roloson helps Isles salvage a point

Unbelievable. If someone had asked me to put last nights game into a one word definition, that would be the word I would choose. Dwayne Roloson was just that for the New York Islanders: Unbelieveable. Age, although it should not be a huge factor in certain players playing careers, is mentioned more often then not when discussing an NHL player. Dwayne Roloson, who has surpassed the 40 years of age plateau, is playing like a goaltender in his prime and his numbers sure show it. The Toronto Maple Leafs were able to take 61 shots on goal last night. Of course Leafs fans are pissed about the loss but Islanders fans should be just as upset about the win. If not for "Rollie" last night, a 3 ...

Islanders lose Martinek for season, but step up against Thrashers

The New York Islanders received a bit of a bad break with news that d-man Radek Martinek would be lost for the season with a knee injury as per The Canadian Press. It was only a matter of time, as all Islanders fans were wondering how long it would take before Martinek was placed on the IR. However, with the way the team has been playing, this is a huge loss and most feel that GM Garth Snow needs to find a replacement as soon as possible. During The Hockey Guys! Hockey cast on Tuesday, myself, Brandon Augienello and Denise Karl (7thWoman) of Hockeybuzz were discussing the Islanders this season, and all three agreed that one of the first steps to making this club a playoff team would...
