11/15/14 Pregame: Isles look to strike first in Tampa Bay

This game is the first of a home and home series between the two talented Eastern Conference teams. They will skate again in Uniondale on Tuesday 11/18/14. Tampa Bay and New York’s statistical lines throughout the 2014-15 look extremely similar.

News & Notes From Across The Sound

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers are off to a fast start to start the season. A dominant power play, improved goaltending of Kevin Poulin and full team efforts have the Sound Tigers in a 4 way tie for the most points in the Eastern Conference.

Islanders Look to Bury Avalanche Tuesday Night

The Islanders will host the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday night at the Nassau Coliseum as the Isles look to extend its winning streak to four and improve to 10-5-0 on the season. It will be the Islanders first home game back after a 3-2-0 road trip out west but will be slightly better than a stop-over before the team hits the road to Florida for two more the rest of the week.

Bark At The Moon; Ending This Road Trip Right

Maybe I should start doing "Cappy's Battle Level" more often. It seems as though the past two games the Islanders have turned on a switch & have played the best hockey of the season so far.

Jaroslav Halak's Slump Won't Last (November-April are better)

Don’t give up on Jaroslav just yet. Many fans of the Islanders have assumed that his performance to open the season was a grim tale of what is to come. The default mode of Islanders’ fans is to be pessimistic. By definition, the loyal fan base seems to expect the worst.

But let’s cool it on writing Jaroslav Halak off as a bust. He has a track record that supports keeping the faith in #41.

Islanders Edge Champion Kings in Shootout, 2-1

What a difference 24 hours can make.
On Wednesday night as the Islanders prepared to face-off with the Anaheim Ducks, there was a feeling of “here we go again” around the club and fans. An overtime victory in Anaheim followed up by a shoot-out win against the Stanley Cup Champion Kings Thursday night and the good vibes were rolling again on Long Island.

Here at The Checking Line sometimes when things start to go south for the Islanders we try our best to lighten everyone's moods.

Capuano Is Staying Put, But For How Long?

The Islanders are on a losing streak to start off the month of November and every Islanders fan is clutching their forehead in a panicked frenzy expecting this team to drop to last place in the Eastern Conference standings overnight.

Two words everyone: calm down.

It cannot be denied that seeing the Islanders drop three games in a row is not a good thing. Nor is it good to see a team that started 4-0 suddenly hovering one game above .500. But it is a very long season and it is still very early.

And despite their recent struggles, the Islanders currently sit at third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Isles Set to Kick Off Road Trip Starting in Denver

The Islanders are set to kick off the first game of their 5 game road trip tonight in Denver, against the Colorado Avalanche. Colorado is currently riding a four game point streak, and will look to extend it tonight.

10/28/14 Postgame: Jets Soar, Isles Sore

The Islanders (6-2-0) have proved to be a confident bunch and the high scoring offense looked to flex their muscles early on against Winnipeg (3-5-0) at the Coliseum. The upstart Isles team has played well and beaten teams that were challenging cogs on their opening schedule but haven’t faced an inferior opponent since Carolina.

The Jets came into 2014-15 without any lofty expectations to burden them. Now they are expected to do even less with an injury sidelining premiere player Evander Kane. Struggling to score goals and without any reliable sources of sustainable offense, they should be dominated by the Isles on any given night. The Isles are clearly the better team at this junction of the season in every facet of their game.

But as every fan and analyst knows, projections and predictions mean nothing when the teams step on the ice. Hockey is a game with its ups and downs built on emotion, momentum and grit. On any given night, the NHL provides a stage for teams to upset supposed better teams.
