The Final Home Game: Isles face Jets

Alas, the final home game of this 2011-2012 season is among us. It almost seems like the norm that the Islanders play their last home game on the schedule and have no post season games to follow. But somehow, the future is bright on Long Island.

But tonight, they face the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets are out of playoff contention as well, so tonight's game should be a pretty nice matchup. Two teams with nothing to lose.

Steve Staios will play in his 1,000th career game tonight. Staios was the first captain of the Atlanta Thrashers. Kind of ironic, isn't it? The man who captained the team which is now the Winnipeg Jets. Staios has yet to have a goal this season, maybe he can put just one up tonight for game #1,000.

Al Montoya gets the nod for tonight's game. John Grahame rides the bench again. Pertaining to Grahame, it will be interesting to see whether Grahame will see any ice time either in this game or the next. If Grahame does not play, it will not be on his "record" that he was a New York Islander.

Mark Eaton is out with an injury and Dylan Reese is scratched. I personally loved the defensive pairing of Reese and Donovan last game, even though the team did not pull out a win.

Just to let you know, it is not in the Islanders plans for John Grahame to start a game. He will only play if for some reason Montoya gets hurt and there are no other options. He hasn't played an NHL game in years; he was just coaching recently. Capuano told me in the last post-game that I did that Montoya is their goalie for the rest of the season.

But back to Grahame, he's also gotten way out of shape. I saw him changing out of his back-up gear at the last home game. Let's just say that he is a little, well, pudgier than most other goaltenders.
