GAME RE-CAP NY Islanders 3 - Washington Capitals 2

The Islanders opened up their four game road trip with a big win against the Capitals in D.C. This victory put them, if only temporarily, tied for the last playoff spot. They played with desperation, taking the play to the Capitals immediately.

Around the four minute mark, Marty Reasoner, standing alone in front misses a point blank shot. The Isles kept up the pressure and at 6:25 of the first Grabner nets a beauty on a nice play from Keith Aucoin. Isles 1 Caps 0

Isles kept the early pressure on, and on a nice play by Kyle Okposo from Neilsen, Isles grab another goal. This time , Josh Bailey buries the puck. Isles 2-Caps 0 However, by the midway point, the Capitals were generating some good chances. Isles were running around a bit, and unable to clear the zone. (Photo: bridgetds/flickr)

With 6:43 left in the first, Jack Capuano decided to use his time out. Time to slow the game down a little, in hopes the Isles would hold onto the lead. Back on the ice, Mark Streit takes a delay of game penalty, and Isles go on the PK.

With some nice save the Islanders manage to escape the first with their 2 goal lead intact. At the beginning of the second period Frans Neilsen has a hooking penalty called against him. Terrible call in my opinion. Neilsen was getting mauled, not sure how that was a call against him.

Islanders, again show off their PK, with a big kill. Some really nice work by Casey Cizikas on the PK. Play opens up a bit, and action is end to end. At 6:03 Steve Olesky takes a hooking penalty and Isles got to the PP.

The team, struggling on the PP, had one quality chance by Kyle Okposo, but Braden Holtby made a beautiful save. No goal on the PP. At 10:05 of the second period, Mike Ribeiro, scores on what was the Capitals first shot of he period. Isles 2-Caps 1

Nabby was making some really nice save, but at 13:28 he lets in a shot by John Carlsen from the point. It was a weak goal that Nabokov missed, but he almost always come through for his team, so onward we go. Isles 2-Caps 2.

On to the third period, and the top line of Tavares, Moulson and Boyes, were struggling all game. Too many turnovers, just couldn't get it going, even on their next PP. Isles managed a couple of chances, but the PP not cooperating tonight.

At 11:38, Okie takes a penalty drawn by Nick Backstrom. Okposo and the Isles really upset, as it looked more like it should have been called against Backstrom. Huge PK for the Isles, and they kill off the third of the night.

Everyone should be on the edge of their seat for this one. I know I was. At 14:42, the top line makes up for their lackluster night as John Tavares scores the game winner on a beautiful play by Matt Moulson. Isles 3-Caps 2

The assist was a milestone for Matt Moulson, as it was his 100th career helper. Some heartstopping moments followed with the Capitals net empty, but the Islanders persevere. (Photo:bobfina72/flickr)

Huge game for this team as they fight for a playoff spot in a congested Eastern Conference.
