The NY Islanders End Road Trip With An OT Win in New Jersey

The NY Islanders end their 5 game road trip with an OT win at the Prudential Center against the NJ Devils. This is not only the end of the road trip, but the first game in a home and home with the Devils coming to the Nassau Coliseum on Sunday.

The Islanders were 3-1-1 on the road, giving them 7 of 10 possible points. Special teams have played a big role on the successful trip. The Isles PK has only allowed 1 PP goal in 26 chances for their opposition. Tonight their PP was also a success, as they went 3 for 4. With the PP improving daily, the special teams are looking good.

Just about 2 minutes into the first period Krystoffer Barch and Eric Boulton drop the gloves. The officials let them have at it, and several punches were landed by both players. After they tired each other out they were both rewarded with a 5 minute penalty for fighting. Get your strength back boys, it's go time at the Prudential Center.

The Islanders did not have any quality scoring chances early in the first. The Devils had several and at the halfway mark, were out shooting the Isles 8-1. The Isles started to pick up their play and the chances started to come. At 13:51 Devils Greene takes an interference penalty and the Isles get on the board with their first of three PP goals.

John Tavares scores the PP goal from Boyes and Nielsen. John Tavares had a great night. He has been looking stronger and more confident in each game. JT is on fire folks! He almost makes it 2-0 a minute later, but Brodeur makes a great save. First period ends with a 1-0 score for the Islanders. SOG for the Devils 10-7.

Early in the second period, Keith Aucoin makes it 2-0 on another PP. The Devils start pressing and a minute later at 3:13, Steve Bernier makes it 2-1 Isles. This perks the Devs up, and the momentum switch is turned on. At 6:21, Ryan Carter, left alone in the crease, makes it all even at 2.

The Islanders need a quick pick me up, and get it on a goal by John Tavares. This play really shows JT's strength and work ethic. He has the puck on a partial breakaway shadowed by Salvador all the way. Tavares manages to hold onto the puck and finds the back of the net. 3-2 Isles, Moulson and Nabokov with the assists.

Henrik Tallinder ties it up at 17:12 for the Devils. This has turned out to be the typical Isles vs. Devils game. Always very close and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Hamonic takes a tripping call and Grabner has a shorthanded breakaway with a minute left, and....he hits the post. All tied up at 3.

In the third, an Islander turnover creates a great scoring chance for Travis Zajac, and Nabokov makes a beautiful save. Ny Islanders Casey Cizikas has a great game. He generated some great scoring chances and demonstrated a gorgeous stick check on a breakaway chance by Devils Carter. (photo credit: Official NY Islanders/Flickr)

Mark Streit makes it 4-3 at 11:32 as his shot gets past Brodeur after hitting Larsson in the crease. Adam Henrique, his first game back from injury, ties it up at 4. Islanders have a bad shift change (8 of them) and are called for too many men with 1:29 left. Nabby really come through and makes some great saves. We are going to OT.

The Islanders start the OT shorthanded and Nabby keeps the team in the game. The Islanders get their own PP at 1:47 of OT, after Tallinder delivers a crosscheck on Matt Moulson. Martin Brodeur makes a huge mistake behind the net and it costs the Devils the game. Tavares snatched the puck from Brodeur and Boyes puts it in to give the Islanders an OT victory.

They have killed 24/26 penalties.

SOG: 35-32 Isles

F/O: 33-26 Isles
