NY Islanders Fall To The Philadelphia Flyers 2-1

Just two days after clinching their first playff berth in 6 years, The Isles came out flat and sluggish in the first period last night at The Wells Fargo Center in Philly. After all the build up and pressure of clinching, we were in for a lacklauster effort. Kevin Poulin got the start at G, as the Isles gave Evgeni Nabokov a well earned rest.

It would have been in the Isles best interest to try to pick up at least a point in this game, as the Rangers and Ottawa both won their respective games, leaving the Isles in the 8th position in the east. If it stays that way, the Isles would have to take on the first place Penguins in the first round of the playoffs.

The Flyers drew first blood on a PP goal by Danny Briere at 9:43 from Simon Gagne and Braden Schenn. Eric Boulton was in th box for crosschecking, and the Isles PK was unable to kill the penalty.

At the end of the first period, the Flyers had outshot the Isles 13-4. Flyers 1, Isles 0 after the 1st.

The Isles came out stronger in the second period, putiing pressure on the Flyers right away, and at 1:37 John Tavares ties the game at one, with an assist going to Matt Carkner.

The Isles received their first and only PP at 7:52 of the second as Scott Hartnell took a double minor for highsticking and roughing. Matt Carkner also received a roughing penalty. The Isles were unable to convert the PP.

Although the Islanders showed a bit more life in the second, they would need more than what they were showing to beat the Flyers. End of the second, all tied at one.

In the third period, the Isles came out strong, but continued their sloppy play, and at 13:29 Oliver Lauridsen scored for the Flyers from Brandon Manning. 2-1 Flyers

The Isles really put out good effort in the last 5 minutes, trying desperately to tie it up. However, that was not to be. Isles pulled Poulin, and after three icing calls on the Flyers, the Islanders just ran out of time.

Tonight the Islanders will close out the regular season in Buffalo. With a win tonight and some luck with saturday's games, they could move up a spot or two. Hopefully they can do that and avoid playing the first place team in the first round.
