The Emergence of Travis Hamonic
It is no secret to most fans of the NHL, the Islanders defense wasn’t the greatest last season but that doesn’t mean everyone playing back there was bad. Travis Hamonic played his second NHL season this past winter and really started to show his bright future.
Drafted in the 2nd round (53rd overall) in 2008, Travis started this past season with the Islanders and became their top defensive defenseman before the season was over. Playing in 73 games this past season, Travis was not only one of the few Islanders to finish on the + side of the +/- rating but he also chipped in 24 points. (Photo Credit: Flickr/Robert Kowal)
Travis faced most of the top lines throughout the league all season and each game he seemed up to the task of taking them out of the game. He is also never afraid to get involved with the dirty areas of the game which is what makes him so valuable. He will block shots, battle in the corners, fight, land the big hit; whatever is needed to help the team win Travis is there.
This type of selfless play is something that the Islanders are looking to teach all of their young prospects and something that they look for in their veteran additions. Travis is going to enter the final year of his entry level contract with this upcoming season.
The Islanders need to make signing Hamonic to a long term deal is one of their top priorities. He is the type of young leader that this team needs long term. There is no doubt that Garth Snow has the same feelings so hopefully this gets taken care of sooner rather than later.
He has the ability to patrol the Islanders blue line for many years to come it would be nice to see Garth sign him to a contract that shows that.
Entering his third season this upcoming fall, Travis will once again be asked to played a large role in the Islanders defense. The young man is like most of the Islanders young core playing wise beyond their years and that is what really makes this team have a bright future.
