Heart Break Strikes Islanders Country Again

Another late game collapse brings heart break to many Islanders fan. The Islanders held a 3 goal lead with just over a period left in the game and still managed to lose in the game in a shoot out.

The Islanders continued to control the play in the second period and the power play had continued success. Alex Oveckin took a hooking penalty in the first half of the period that lead to the Islanders second power play goal of the game. It came when Tavares was able to find the back of the net on a rebound off a shot from Streit. Also getting his (Photo Credit Flickr/ Clydeorama)second assist of the night was Travis Hamonic who saw some time on the power play. The Capitals responded right back when Dennis Wideman scored on a rebound from a shot by Aucoin at 9:33 into the second period to bring the score to 3-1. The Islanders kept fighting and were able to make the score 4-1 when Tavares struck again. Scoring off a 3 on 2 rush with Moulson and Okposo he was able to continue his big night. The assists were given to Okposo and once again Travis Hamonic. This became Hamonic first career 3 point night. The Islanders continued to fight and control most of the play until Oveckin scored on a rebound from Laich and Johansson with under a minute left in the period to bring the Capitals back to within 2 goals. The Islanders continued to implode in the 3rd period when just under two minutes into the period Orlov cut down from the point untouched to beat Nabokov to make it 4-3 Islanders. The complete collapse was finished when Oveckin was able to find his own rebound and tie the game at four at 10:15 of the third. The Islanders had some chances to close out the third period but were unable to find the back of the net.

The overtime period went scoreless but was mostly dominated by the Islanders. They held the puck in the Capitals zone for most of the overtime but ended with nothing to show for it. The shoot out showed misses by Nielsen, Tavares, and Streit for the Islanders. The only goal for the Islanders came from Matt Moulson. The Capitals shoot out showed Oveckin and Hendricks scoring for the win.

This is truly a game that shows the Islanders inexperience and young age. A team that has experience would not give up a 3 goal lead with just a little over period to play in a game. Once the Islanders are able to hold on to leads like this one then we will truly see the team that all Islanders fans want and expect.

Streaks and moments like these remind me why I'm an Isles fan (not for the right reason). The team hasn't been able to close out games like this for 3 years now it seems like. The Isles are just terrible with 3 goal leads (as we all saw in Colorado this year). I just don't know what to say anymore, they're not breaking our hearts anymore, they're ripping it out and stomping all over it.
