Prospect Report 3/16/12: UPDATED College Forward Edition
In this edition of the prospect report I will update you guys on the seasons of Andres Lee and Brock Nelson, two college forwards. To check out my original analysis of these two guys click here.
Andres Lee is a big center man from the University Of Notre Dame. His season has come to a close with his teams lost to Michigan in the 2nd round of the CCHA playoffs. While this doesn’t truly mean the season is over until the NCAA tournament is over it is believed that Norte Dame is a long shot to even make it into the tournament. Lee finished the season playing in 38 games and scoring 16 goals and adding 17 assist for 33 points. Lee led his team in goals and shots on goal for the season.
Now that Lee’s season is most likely over he does have the option to join the Islanders at any point. The Islanders were trying hard to sign Lee last summer and Lee made it known that he wanted to continue his college career for at least one more season. If Lee was to sign with the Islanders his college career would end so this must be a difficult decision for Lee to make. If he signs before the Islanders season is over he would be able to play in a few games for the Islanders and get a feel for the professional hockey life. Furthermore if he plays in under 9 games this season, it wouldn’t count against his contract and it wouldn’t be considered his rookie season.
I believe Lee has all the tools and is ready to give professional hockey a try; it is up to Garth now to convince Lee to give up college for it. In a perfect world I would like to see Lee signed before this season is over and get a chance at a few games with the Islanders. This would give the Islanders a chance to see how he plays in the NHL and it could help them decide where Lee should start next season. I still think Lee could benefit from some time in Bridgeport next season just so he can get accustomed to professional hockey before he has the pressure of playing for the Islanders on him.
Brock Nelson helped to continue his team’s season last night when North Dakota beat St. Cloud State in the WCHA Final Five quarterfinal. Nelson had two goals in the game himself which helped pad his season’s goal total which in now league leading with 25. The win also put North Dakota in a good spot to make the NCAA Championship tournament. The selections for the tournament will be made this Sunday. Nelson has played in 38 games so far this season and has 25 goals and 17 assist to give him 42 points on the season, tied for the team lead. (Photo Credit: Flickr/Sapierson)
Nelson’s season isn’t over just yet but I am sure that once it does end he will be in the same spot as Lee with deciding to join the Islanders or continue his college career. Just like Lee, I do believe that Nelson has all the tools to join the Islanders now and would benefit from some NHL/AHL caliber coaching. It will be interesting to see what Nelson picks once his season is over.
Both of these young men are ready to take the next step in their hockey careers but that next step is all up to them about when they want to take it. Let’s hope that they decide to do it soon and join the Islanders before next season.
