Prospect Report 3/21/12: Prospect News Update
With this edition of the prospect report I decided to update Islanders fans about some of the news that has happened recently with some Islanders prospects. Recently we have seen prospects sign amateur try out contracts with Bridgeport, one sign an entry level deal with the Islanders, and one decide that he isn’t quite done with college yet. If you are lost don’t worry I will explain it all.
I will start with the amateur try out contracts (ATO) with Bridgeport. Johan Persson, an Islander’s prospect from the 2011 NHL draft has left his junior team to play a few games in the AHL before the season is over. I have previously written about Persson in an article you can find by clicking here. He finished this season in the WHL with 58 points in 70 games. The 19 year-old has some good size so it will be interesting to see him work in the AHL over the next few games.
Also signing an ATO with Bridgeport is goalie Dan Clarke from Quinnipiac University. Clarke is an undrafted college free agent and will get his shot with Bridgeport to see if he has what it takes to make it in professional hockey. Clarke finished the season with an 8-3 record to go along with a 2.37 GAA and .895 save percentage. With Poulin and Nilsson both having solid seasons in Bridgeport, I am unsure how much playing time Clarke will see during his time with Bridgeport but we will have to wait and see.
The Islanders also took a chance on signing Mike Halmo to an entry level contract recently. Halmo is an undrafted free agent currently playing with the Owen Sound Attack of the OHL. He is currently ranked 5th in the OHL in scoring with 84 points (40 goals and 44 assist) which is a good sign but Halmo is 20 years old and playing against mostly younger players in the OHL. I haven’t been able to see Halmo play so I am not sure if he is a gifted scorer or if he is just capitalizing on being older. Halmo is still currently with the Attack serving a 10 game suspension for a head hit on top rated prospect Nail Yakupov. Since Halmo is 20 years old I would expect him to either join Bridgeport before the season is over or be with them at the start of the season next fall. (Photo Credit/ www.newyorkislanders.com)
Finally highly rated prospect Andres Lee has informed the Islanders that he plans to return to Notre Dame for his junior season. Lee who had a very successful season this past year seemed ready to make the jump for the NHL but it seems he wants some more time playing college hockey. I for one was pretty excited at the idea of Lee playing for the Islanders next season but this is his choice and not the Islanders so you can’t fault him for that. Hopefully Lee will have continued success next season at Notre Dame and will be ready to join the Islanders at the end of next season.
Also be on the lookout for Islander’s prospect Brock Nelson as he looks to continue his great season in the NCAA Championship tournament this weekend. North Dakota and Nelson will take on Western Michigan this Saturday in a first round match up. Another Islander’s prospect Scott Mayfield has also found himself in the NCAA tournament and he will play Friday night against Ferris State. Both games can be found on ESPNU and ESPN3 so be sure to tune in.
