Prospect Report 4/6/12: Prospects News and Notes
This edition of the prospect report I will look to update you on all the news and notes surrounding Islanders prospects. Some prospects decided it is time to go pro while others continue their march through the playoffs with their current teams.
To start, the news came down earlier this week that Islanders prospect Brock Nelson decided to leave college and start his NHL career by signing a 3 year entry level contract. Nelson is considered to be one of the Islanders best prospects and it is exciting seeing him ready to take the next step in his development. Nelson also signed an Amateur Tryout contract with Bridgeport that will allow him to join them this weekend to finish out the season and get a taste of some playoff hockey. Nelson will see his first action tonight as the Sound Tigers take on Syracuse. He will wear number 29. (Photo Credit: Flickr/SaraMelikian)
Mike Halmo finished up his junior season recently when the Owen Sound Attack was eliminated from the playoffs. Since this happened Halmo also decided it was time to move on to the AHL ranks and report to Bridgeport. Halmo joined the Sound Tigers earlier this week and made his debut this past Wednesday against Springfield. He didn’t make the score sheet but his physical presence was shown with a fight. Much like Nelson, Halmo will finish out the regular season with Bridgeport and help with their playoff run.
The success of Ryan Strome is still making headlines as his Niagara IceDogs will continue their playoff run this weekend when they take on the Brampton Battalion in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. In the first series of the playoffs Strome scored 5 goals to go with 5 assists in 6 games. He will look to continue this pace and lead his team to a second round victory when the series opens tonight in Niagara. (Photo Credit: Flickr/Mandelux12)
Also continuing his playoff run is prospect Kirill Kabanov. His junior team the Shawinigan Cataractes advanced recently to the quarter finals of the QMJHL playoffs where they will play Chicoutimi Sagueneens. So far in 4 games this post season Kabanov has 2 goals and 2 assist. The series also starts tonight at Shawinigan.
