Prospect Report 6/18/12: Top 5 Possible Future Islanders
On this edition of the prospect report I will give the top 5 players most likely to join the Islanders this Friday at the 2012 NHL entry draft. Now this isn’t a top 5 of players available in the draft this is just my top 5 of players that I could see Garth taking in the 1st round of the draft.
#5 Morgan Rielly- Defenseman, Moose Jaw (WHL) 6’-0” 190lbs
Morgan Rielly comes in at number 5 with one requirement for the Islanders to pick him and that is; if the right deal comes along and Garth Snow ends up trading down a few spots. Rielly is projected to be a very good future NHL prospect that has a great offensive game. He missed most of last season with an ACL injury but is still considered to be one of the better offensive defenseman in the draft.
He would be a little bit of a reach for being selected at the number 4 spot but if Garth finds a deal that interests him and has him moving back a few spots then this could be his pick.
#4 Ryan Murrary- Defenseman, Everett (WHL) 6’-1” 200lbs
Ryan Murrary is hands down the best defenseman in the draft and should go within the top 5 picks of the draft. I have him at number 4 on this list because I don’t believe he will still be on the board when the Islanders pick at number 4. He would be a great addition to the Islanders and could very well step in for the Islanders right away if needed. Lots of die-hard including myself are hoping that he does fall to #4 but it is unlikely. (Photo Credit: Flickr/gzbhow)
#3 Mikhail Grigorenko- Forward, Quebec (QMJHL) 6’-3” 200lbs
Mikhail is a large Russian forward that has great hands and amazing vision. Mikhail has some people scared because of the “Russian factor” and the possibility of him leaving for the KHL but he has stated that he wants the NHL and nothing else. He has been a mainstay on the Russian national junior team and in his first season of North American hockey he was able to dominate and score 85 points in 59 games.
Mikhail is a great prospect that any team would be lucky to have but it is still not a sure thing that he will be available for the Islanders to pick at the 4th overall spot. The Canadians picking at #3 are said to be looking to add a strong offensive prospect so Mikhail may get taken just before the Islanders pick.
#2 Teuvo Teravainen- Forward, Jokerit (Fin) 5’-10” 161lbs
A late comer to the top prospect party, Teuvo is quickly moving up everyone’s draft charts. Teuvo would certainly be a surprise pick but he has all the talent and skill to be a great player in the NHL. Teuvo spent most of last season as a 17 year old playing in the Finish Elite league. He was able to score 18 points in 40 games but for an extremely young man playing in a professional league that is quite respectable. He is said to be a quick skater with good playmaking abilities and excellent on ice vision. This could be Garth’s trick that he is hiding up his selves but he won’t fool or surprise me if he makes this move on Friday evening.
#1 Filip Forsberg- Forward, Leksands (Swe) 6’-1” 176lbs
Forsberg is who I believe is Garth’s #1 target going into this Friday. The talented Swedish winger seems to be a piece that is missing in the Islanders rebuild. A strong winger with great skating abilities and a quick shot to match would be a great addition to any line centered by either Tavares or Strome. A hardworking young man is exactly what the Islanders are looking to add. If Forsberg is available when Garth walks to the stage Friday evening then I expect Forsberg to join him and try on an Islanders sweater. (Photo Credit: Flickr/Michael Erhardsson)
This is just my take on what Garth Snow may do this Friday evening but given what he has done in the past and the players available this is who I see as the top 5 players that he may take. Garth has also been known to have a trick up his sleeve so he may even ending selecting someone not on this list, we will all have to wait until this weekend to find out.
