Islanders Name Greg Cronin Assistant Coach, Doug Weight promoted
The Islanders announced the hiring of Greg Cronin as an assistant coach on Jack Capuano's staff for the upcoming 2014-2015 season. He returns to the Islanders organization after previously working as an assistant coach from 1999-2003 and two years as the Head Coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Cronin's focus for the coaching staff will be working to improve the defense and penalty kill which were both major issues last season. In between stints with the Islanders he was the Head Coach at Northeastern University and for the past three seasons he was an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Cronin has ties to coach Capuano and General Manager Garth Snow through the University of Maine when Cronin coached Snow and having coached Capuano's older brother Dave. (Photo Credit- Flickr)
In addition, it was also announced that Doug Weight has been promoted to Assistant General Manager in addition to retaining his duties as an assistant coach. He was previously a Special Advisor to Snow. Weight has been a key member of the organization since joining as a player in 2008. He spent three seasons as an Islanders players, the last two as captain before retiring in 2011 and making the transition to coaching and front office work. (Photo Credit- Newsday)
Along with Weight and Cronin, the Islanders announced that Bob Corkum and Matt Bertaini will also be assistants on the staff that also includes returning goaltending coach Mike Dunham.
