An Islanders Themed Wedding for Local Couple
The use of social media has grown dramatically among individuals. While dating sites are popular for many people to find that special someone, it isn’t the only way via the internet to find that perfect match. A local couple connected on Facebook through both liking a page with a common interest, New York Islanders hockey.
Kimberly Scudiero of Seaford and Shawn Shea of Amityville are two longtime Islanders fans who were married on Sunday. One thing the newly married couple both agreed on, they never thought they would find that special one on Facebook. They connected on the Islanders page after both commenting on a post. As of this month, the Islanders have over 150,000 likes on their page and on Twitter they have over 106,000 followers. It was a unique way and somewhat different way to meet but they clicked and it led to marriage.
Shawn proposed in October 2012 but it took a little longer to plan it than he had anticipated due to last season’s lockout which canceled his original plan. He had contacted the team to set up the proposal during the home opener of the 2012-2013 season during a TV timeout. It was then on to Plan B and with some thinking; Shawn came up with another plan! A few weeks prior to their anniversary, Kimberly asked Shawn if he had any ideas of what the two of them could do to celebrate. Shawn instantly suggested that the two of them go ice skating at Newbridge Arena in Hicksville, the place where they went on their first date. Kimberly found this to be a great idea because she had wanted to go back. Shawn thought it would be nice to "re-enact" their first date by having Kimberly meet him there like they had done in the past after connecting on Facebook.
Shawn then skated two hours with that ring in his pocket before finally pulling Kimberly aside to do what he had planned to do all along! They skated to the bench to take a break when suddenly, Shawn's friend, Pete, appeared there. Thinking nothing of it, Kimberly figured Pete just happened to be there like them. Little did Kimberly know, Shawn had arranged for him to come take pictures throughout this special day and especially capture what was about to happen next. Shawn started talking to Kimberly telling her how special a place Newbridge Arena is to them. Shawn then told Kimberly that he wanted to make it even more special, got down on one knee, and asked Kimberly to marry him. Without hesitation, Kimberly said "YES!"
It was then on to the special day which was filled with a New York Islanders theme from the cocktail hour, to place cards, the guest tables plus in the entertainment that made all the guests feel like it was at the coliseum. The Islanders theme was well done and kudos to the couple on their creativity in planning the wedding. The tables were named after all the retired names in the Coliseum rafters with two special additions in John Tavares and Travis Hamonic beating out Sparky for the table name contention. It was even attended by members of our Checking Line staff including myself, fellow writer Pete Paguaga, and our Editor in Chief Rob McGowan. Many of the guests in attendance read our website so for me, attending the Islanders themed wedding wouldn’t have been completed without a post for our readers to enjoy.
If it wasn’t for the Islanders social media and the great people in the organization who maintain the operation of these outlets every day, great stories like this one can’t be told. On behalf of myself, Pete, Rob and the rest of our team we congratulate Kimberly and Shawn and wish them nothing but a great Islanders life together.
