Postgame 3/23/14: Islanders defeat Blue Jackets 2-0

A few days off might of just been what the Islanders needed. They completed their 4 game homestand on Sunday afternoon against the Blue Jackets winning in shutout fashion by the final score of 2-0.

The goaltending matchup for this game featured Evgeni Nabokov for the Islanders and Sergei Bobrovsky for the Blue Jackets. Columbus is in the middle of the playoff race and looking to pickup as many points as possible down the stretch to possibly earn home ice advantage. In the game today it was the Islanders making all the big plays they needed. With under 7 minutes left in the opening period Cal Clutterbuck scored his 10th goal of the season to give the Islanders an early 1-0 lead.

Throughout the game it was Nabokov who was the story of the day. He faced 41 shots stopping everyone and it was good enough for the win. A power play goal late in the 2nd period from Travis Hamonic his 2nd goal of the season was all the Islanders needed to seal this victory. Nabokov played some of his best hockey of the season as he earned his 3rd shutout of the year and his 58th for his career. The Islanders penalty kill was a perfect 6 for 6 on the day and 11 of the Nabokov saves came during the penalty kill.

As the homestand came to a close, the Islanders now head on the road starting Tuesday night at the Carolina Hurricanes.
