A Sportscasting Journey with Howie Rose

Many young sports fans dream of one day playing for their favorite team while other sports fans have the dream of covering their favorite team on television or the radio. This past March, longtime Islanders play by play voice Howie Rose published the novel Put It In the Book: A Half Century of Mets Mania where takes fans behind the microphone, into the locker rooms, and through the last 50 years of Mets baseball.

You might ask yourself why on this website would a Mets novel be discussed but if you haven’t read the novel you will agree with me why any Islanders fan should pick up a copy. Howie takes you on an exciting journey throughout his broadcasting career more than just the time he has spent working for the Mets. His childhood idol growing up was Marv Albert who wrote the foreward to the book and you will learn a lot about Albert and Howie’s connections in hockey broadcasting. Anyone who has grown up a New York sports fan or have listened or watched Howie call play by play would want to pickup this book. (Photo Credit- www.barnesandnoble.com)

This summer I had the opportunity to attend a book signing and talk that Howie Rose did here on Long Island at Barnes and Noble in Garden City. Besides hearing my college professors speak about novels they have written I have never attended a book talk. For someone like me who wants to become a sportscaster some day it was a great event that he did and he was very personable with the crowd and a lot of great stories were told about his career and even some great Islanders discussions. You can see me on the left with Howie after he signed my book and yes I did wear my Mets jersey because it was in the middle of baseball season. (Photo Credit- John Santamaria)

Put It In the Book is a great read for the sports fan or an aspiring sportscaster who would love to go on a great ride of a dream career that Howie Rose has had. He has done many book signings in the area and keep a lookout for more once Islanders hockey returns as fans may get an opportunity to get this novel signed.
