DiPietro's Chosen Words Spark Controversy In Isles Country
Kevin Maher of News12 sent out a few tweets today that quoted recently demoted Islanders goaltender, Rick DiPietro. The tweets immediately spread like wildfire over the Twitter-verse and have prompted a response from Isles GM Garth Snow (Photo Credit: xjowell/Flickr).
Maher's tweets read as follows:
@KMaherNews12 DiPietro told me Isles waiving him felt like, "they ripped my heart out, stabbed it, set it on fire and flushed it down the toilet."
DiPietro also apparently made another comment that without his wife's support over the years, that he would have "driven into a tree." Reports from Arthur Staple, Katie Strang, and TSN have added that DP elaborated on the subject and said that he has never actually contemplated suicide and does not look at the topic as a laughing matter.
The Islanders former first overall pick and number one goaltender has been the recipient of incredible blame and ridicule due to the abundance of injuries he sustained after signing the controversial 15-year deal seven years ago.
Rick has been known to make many outrageous comments throughout his injury-riddled career, and it appears that today's should be another handful of words thrown onto that list. With that being said, DiPietro has consistently faced an uphill battle since signing the lifetime contract and has not had much support from the Islanders fan base during his road to recovery.
To the contrary, the Islanders management and coaching staff had made his recovery a priority for several years and consistently backed his rehabilitation process. But the drafting of goaltenders Kevin Poulin, Mikko Koskinen and Anders Nilsson indicated that the organization was planning to eventually move away from DiPietro and his health issues if his playing ability did not improve.
Although being waived and sent to the minors had to disappoint him, claiming that the organization that always supported him "flushed" his heart down the toilet feels a bit immature. And it appears that GM Garth Snow plans on handling those comments as well.
Per the Isles official press release:
UNIONDALE, NY (February 28, 2013) — Below is a statement from New York Islanders General Manager, Garth Snow about comments made by goalie Rick DiPietro earlier today.
“We are aware of Rick’s comments today and the severity of them. We will handle them internally as we do with all player matters. This is an opportunity for Rick to play lots of games in Bridgeport.”
The last statement about Rick's opportunity with the Sound Tigers indicates that Snow might have a problem with what his former partner in the crease had to say today.
When Maher asked DiPietro if he is part of the Islanders future plans, he responded that he did not know.
Rick will get his first start with the Sound Tigers tomorrow night in Hartford.
