The Weight for the Islanders Maybe Over

New York- It has been a long time since the New York Islanders have held Lord Stanley’s Cup over their head. Gone are the days of the Dynasty but maybe now with this 2010-11 mix of veterans and youngsters a new reign of great hockey can begin.

One part of a successful 2010-11 will be key players coming back from injuries including Captain Doug Weight and goalkeeper Rick DiPietro. Also a key will be a new defensive core for the Islanders including Mark Eaton, Milan Jurcina and James Wisniewski.

Returning to the defensive line will be Radek Martinek who was shut-down due to a knee injury. Martinek who is known as a good scoring defensive presence will be a welcome addition back to the team. Also returning to steady the defensive line will be Bruno Gervais who in the 2009-10 season established a career high in games played (71) and shots (83) in his fifth season with the team.

Offensively for the Islanders the development of John Tavares, who will be having the majority of the playing time as the Center for the Isles, is going to be a huge part of a successful season. This will be Tavares’ second season in the League after skating in 82 games, while scoring 24 games to go along with 30 assists. New York needs a spectacular sophomore year from the young center if they ever hope to make it to the Playoffs this season.

Also key will be the play of Trent Hunter, who is one of the many players the Islanders will need healthy if they want to contend in what is a very improved Eastern Conference. Right winger Kyle Okposo hopes to continue to impact the Islanders offense in what is now his third full season with the Islanders. Okposo who has been serving as an assistant captain for two seasons finished second on the team in scoring with 19 goals and 33 assists.

Going back to the goalkeeping the good news for the Islanders fans will be backup keeper Dwayne Roloson. Rolson was very steady as the starter in place of the injured DiPieto; will need to continue to give the Islanders the same type of key saves if they wish to contend in this 2010-11 season.
