Postgame 11/16: Red Wings @ Islanders
The Islanders opened up the scoring in the first period as John Tavares deflected a Josh Bailey shot past the Red Wings goaltender. Seconds later, Evgeni Nabokov was left out to dry when Darren Helm scored on a 2-0. Nabokov was injured on the play. He left the game with a groan injury and did not return. He was replaced by Kevin Poulin.
With a little less than 3 minutes left, Pavel Datsyuk deflected a power play goal of his own to give the Red Wings a 2-1 advantage going into the intermission.
Deep in the second period, the scoring really began picking up. With 2:10 remaining, Casey Cizikas backhanded a shot into a wide open net to even up the game at 2. The goal was assisted by Matt Martin and Colin McDonald. 33 seconds later, Johan Franzen scored on a wrist shot that Kevin Poulin couldn't see through a screen.
Just when you thought the action for the period was over, Brock Nelson scores on a power play goal to nod the game at 3. This was an incredible ending to the second and may have been the most entertaining few minutes of the season.
Pierre-Marc Bouchard tipped a goal that rewarded Aaron Ness with his first assist of the year. The Islanders dominated the entire 3rd period and really did some wonderful forechecking. It looked as though they were going to finally close out a game in third.
But, with 43 seconds left and the Red Wings net empty, Pavel Datsyuk banked a goal off of an Islanders defender to tie the game. Yet another third period collapse for these struggling Islanders.
The Isles were rewarded with a power play in the overtime period but could not capitilize. Frans Nielson scored the lone goal in the shootout to lead the Islanders to victory.
All lines seemed to generate excellent chances throughout the game. This is vital to the Islanders success. They need struggling players like Josh Bailey and Michael Grabner to step up their game. With some healthy bodies returning soon, the Islanders need to start playing with some consistancy. Especially in the third period.
