Pregame 12/05/13: Islanders @ Blues
The Islanders will take their struggles on an extremely difficult 5 game road trip. The first of the five will be against one of the most talented teams in the league in the St. Louis Blues. This is an unfamiliar opponent for them because they have been in different conferences over the years.
The Blues are very tough to play at home. Their record in Scottrade Center is 11-1-2 at home. A player to keep an eye on during this contest is Alex Steen. He has had a marvelous start to his season. He has tallied 20 goals in 26 games and the Islanders defense must keep a watchful eye on him.
The Islanders have caught the Blues at a good time. They lost 2 games back to back in regulation for the first time all year. The Isles must take advantage of what could be a team lacking confidence. The Blues have a cup contending team for sure. They have the ability and the roster to be able to compete with any team that gets in their way.
Jaroslav Halak will get the nod in between the pipes. It is important to remember that name. The Islanders have been looking to acquire a goaltender for some time now. This man has been on their radar because the Blues have two excellent goalies in him and Brian Elliot. This could be a possible option for the Islanders who have struggled to keep the puck out of their net.
The Islanders have a tendency to play to the opposing teams ability. For example, in games against the Pittsburgh Penguins, they look like a playoff contending team. But, against less talented teams like the Carolina Hurricanes, their game seems to be less impressive. Anything could happen tonight in Missouri.
Secondary scoring has been a term throw around for a while now. The Isles need more than just the top line to contribute on the score sheet. Players like Frans Nielson, Josh Bailey and Michael Grabner need to develop a consistent contribution. Without an improvement from the lower 3 lines, the Islanders will stay in the basement of the Metropolitan Division.
